Nature's Cure: Why You Need More Time Outdoors

5/28/2024

Think back to a time when you spent a day outdoors, perhaps hiking in the mountains, relaxing on a beach, or simply walking in a park. How did that experience make you feel physically, mentally, and emotionally? What changes did you notice in your mood, energy levels, and overall sense of wellbeing?

In our fast-paced, technology-driven world, it's easy to find ourselves spending most of our time indoors and in front of screens.

Did you know that we spend over 90% of our time inside and average 7 hours of screen time daily? For teens, it's even closer to 8 hours!

This aspect of our lifestyle has significant impacts on our health and wellbeing. It is no wonder why our mental and physical health problems are climbing at an alarming rate...

As a parent of 3 young boys the effects of limited outdoor time and increase screen time are undeniable. Their moods are stable, they eat more food, bedtime routine is easy and best of all they sleep all through the night.

Adults are no different, however, being that we are more mature we can mask our feelings and emotions unlike a toddler who doesn't know why his nervous system is overstimulated from watching a tablet for hours a day.

Below are a few of the many negatives and positives our relationship with nature can have.

Negatives of Our Current Lifestyle:
  • Eye Strain and Poor Vision: Increased screen time is linked to digital eye strain and myopia.
  • Mental Health Issues: Higher levels of stress, anxiety, and depression.
  • Poor Sleep Quality: Disrupted circadian rhythms due to blue light exposure.
  • Physical Health Problems: Sedentary lifestyle contributing to obesity and cardiovascular diseases.

Positives of Being in Nature:
  • Fresh Air: Improves respiratory health.
  • Improved Eyesight: Reduces the risk of myopia.
  • Nervous System Regulation: Lowers stress hormones.
  • Enhanced Energy Levels: Regulates circadian rhythm for better sleep and energy.
  • Vitamin D: Crucial for bone health and immune function.
  • Grounding: Reduces inflammation and improves overall wellbeing.

Additional Benefits:
  • Cognitive Improvements: Better attention, memory, and creativity.
  • Physical Activity: Promotes cardiovascular health.
  • Social Interaction: Encourages social connections.
  • Nature Therapy: Practices like forest bathing improve mood.
  • Biodiversity Awareness: Encourages sustainable living habits.
  • Immune System Boost: Enhances immune function.

I encourage you to make a conscious effort to integrate more nature into our daily lives. Try taking a daily walk in a park, engage in outdoor hobbies, or plan weekend getaways to natural locations. Even small changes can make a big difference!

Reconnecting with nature offers numerous health benefits and can significantly improve our overall quality of life. Let's take steps today to reduce our screen time and embrace the outdoors for a healthier, happier future.
